Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback) Her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. However, her parents were not keen to let her pursue acting until she became older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry said she felt shy to act in high school but began acting in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred to the university from Boston University. After graduating Perry relocated in New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought the actress back to California which is where she discovered acting work. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway with her as part of The Other Place, in 2013. The show featured the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was a part of nine episodes of ABC's show The Family. In 2017, Perry had a minor role on ABC's political thriller Scandal which starred her father. Also, she was cast on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. Despite her family link to the character she received the part through an audition.
